Tropical Forests

WorldPhysical Environment

Locations of equatorial evergreen broadleaf forests, which are forests that receive high rainfall throughout the year

FAO

A map highlights (green) the regions in which the tropical forests are found such as Central and South America, West and Central Africa, Southeast Asia, and Oceania.

In North America, except for a tiny strip in South Florida, tropical forests are mainly restricted to the coastal regions of southern Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean islands. In South America, tropical forests occur along the Pacific coasts of Colombia and Ecuador, across northern Colombia and Venezuela, and throughout the Amazon basin in Brazil and neighboring countries, extending to the Atlantic coast. Small extensions of tropical forest continue south through Bolivia and Paraguay to northern Argentina, with patches in eastern Brazil and its southeastern coast.

In sub-Saharan Africa, tropical forests are found along the Atlantic coast from southern Senegal to Ghana, east through Nigeria, northern Cameroon, and the Central African Republic. A large region covers Gabon, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and extends into Angola and Zambia. Scattered patches are present in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique. A significant area is also found along the east coast of Madagascar.

In Asia, tropical forests are in India along the west coast, the Himalayas' foothills in northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, northeast India, eastern India near the Bay of Bengal, and Sri Lanka. Southeast Asia has extensive forests in northern Myanmar, parts of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Indonesia has forests on Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, and Iran Jaya. In the Philippines, small forested areas remain on several islands.

In Oceania, tropical forests cover most of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, part of New Caledonia, and narrow zones along Australia's northern and northeastern coasts.
