Atmospheric pressure at mean sea level for the month of January

NOAA

A map shows the isobars (contour lines of atmospheric pressure) for sea-level pressure in January, indicating areas of high and low pressure with 2 millibar intervals.

The isobars are depicted as orange lines. These lines illustrate how atmospheric pressure changes between areas of high and low pressure.

Widely spaced isobars: These are found mostly between the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Narrowly spaced isobars: In the Northern Hemisphere, these are found around the lows in the North Pacific Ocean, near Greenland and Iceland in the North Atlantic, and over eastern Russia in Asia. In the Southern Hemisphere, these tightly packed isobars occur between the highs in the southern parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans and the lows farther south along the coast of Antarctica.
