Habitat Fragmentation

The habitat fragmentation levels worldwide are categorized from very low to extremely high. Areas with very low fragmentation, shown in the lightest green, include much of Canada (Yukon, Northwest Territories), Greenland, and parts of the Amazon Basin in South America (Brazil, Peru, Colombia). Low fragmentation regions, indicated by a slightly darker green, span across parts of Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan), parts of the Andes in South America, and large portions of Tibetan plateau and Malaysia. Moderately low fragmentation areas, marked in a medium green, cover parts of Canada, central South America (Bolivia, Paraguay), parts of Africa (Gabon and Democratic Republic of Congo), and Asia (Saudi Arabia, Israel, and China). Moderate fragmentation, depicted in a darker green, is observed in areas such as the eastern United States (Appalachian Mountains, Great Lakes region), central South America (Brazil's Cerredo), parts of north-central Russia, parts of Asia (China, Mongolia), and parts of Australia. Moderately high fragmentation, shown in an even darker green, is seen in the western United States, Venezuela, parts of Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Gabon, Namibia), central China, and parts of Australia. High fragmentation, marked in a dark green, is found in areas like the western United States, western South America (Ecuador, Peru, and Chile), Western Europe (United Kingdom, Netherlands), Northern Africa (Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Chad, Niger), Russia, Asia (Ian, Uzbekistan, parts of Western Ghats of India). Very high fragmentation, indicated in a very dark green, is prevalent in densely populated and industrialized regions such as the northeastern United States, eastern China, northern India, and parts of Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam). Extremely high fragmentation, the darkest shade of green, is concentrated in major urban and industrial regions, including the northeastern United States (New York, New Jersey), parts of southern Brazil, western Europe (northern Italy, Belgium), and densely populated areas of East Asia (Japan, South Korea).

Mean Sea-Surface Temperature

Sea-surface temperatures create latitudinal bands extending east to west, influenced by ocean currents and continents. In the tropics, temperatures range from 24.0 to 32.0 degrees Celsius; in the midlatitudes, from 8.0 to 23.9 degrees Celsius; and in higher latitudes and polar regions, from negative 2.0 to 7.9 degrees Celsius. Significant deviations occur along the Atlantic coast of western Europe, where temperatures are warmer than the east coast of North America at the same latitude, and along the Pacific coast of Canada, the Atlantic coasts of Canada and the northeastern United States, and the western coasts of South America and southern Africa, where waters are cooler than expected. The hottest ocean areas are between Indonesia and Australia (30.0 to 32.0 degrees Celsius), followed by tropical parts of the western Pacific and Indian oceans, and small areas along the coasts of West Africa and Central America (28.0 to 29.9 degrees Celsius).
