United Nations Security Council: Permanent Members

The 2004 presidential election in the United States pitted Republican incumbent President George W. Bush against Democrat John Kerry. This layer portrays the popular vote results at the county and county-equivalent level. The map portrays the winner of the popular vote while data probing, placing the mouse over a county, displays the percentage of the vote for each candidate and the total number of votes cast. In the 2004 election, Mr. Bush won the majority of counties and county equivalents. Mr. Kerry won the popular vote in the most of the major urban centers with the exception of Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Salt Lake City, and Cincinnati, which were won by Mr. Bush. Mr. Kerry also won in along the Pacific coast in California, Oregon and Washington, northern Arizona, northern New Mexico, southern Colorado, along the southern half of the Mississippi River, extreme southern Texas, northern Minnesota, eastern Iowa, southwestern Wisconsin central Alabama, central South Carolina, and the majority of counties in New Jersey and the New England states. Mr. Bush won the Alaskan municipalities while Mr. Kerry won the counties of Hawaii.

Ecological Regions: Level 1 Regions

Arctic Cordillera (Red): Found in the northernmost parts of Canada, specifically the Arctic Archipelago. Tundra (Blue): Covers large portions of northern Canada, including parts of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, as well as coastal areas of Alaska. Taiga (Purple): Spans across central and northern Canada, covering parts of Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. Hudson Plain (Orange): Located in the northeastern part of Canada, around the Hudson Bay area. Boreal Forests (Yellow): Encompasses large areas in Canada, south of the tundra and taiga regions, and extends into parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. Northwestern Forested Mountains (Green): Found along the western coast of Canada and the United States, covering parts of British Columbia and Alaska. Marine West Coast Forest (Brown): Occupies the coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest, including areas in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and northern California. Eastern Temperate Forests (Pink): Stretch from the Great Lakes region through the northeastern United States and into eastern Canada. Great Plains (Grey): Span the central United States from Canada to Texas, including parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and several central U.S. states. Deserts and Steppes (Dark Green): Found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, covering areas in Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of California and Nevada. Mediterranean California (Dark Pink): Specific to the coastal regions of central and southern California. Southern Semi-Arid Highlands (Gold): Located in central Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States. Temperate Sierras (Dark Brown): Found in Mexico, primarily in the Sierra Madre ranges. Tropical Dry Forests (Light Brown): Present in parts of southern Mexico and Central America. Tropical Wet Forests (Light Tan): Located in the southeastern part of Mexico and Central America, including the Yucatan Peninsula.

The outcrops of carbonate rocks are scattered across various regions. In North America, notable areas include the southeastern United States and parts of Mexico. The Caribbean also has some carbonate rock outcrops. In South America, small outcrops are present in Brazil. Africa has outcrops in northwestern and southern regions, including Morocco, Algeria, and South Africa. Europe shows significant outcrops in central and southern areas, particularly in countries like Spain, Italy, and Austria. Russia has some outcrops, while Asia has smaller areas of outcrops in countries like Myanmar, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Japan. In Australia, outcrops are found in the southern part of the country.
