Global Land Cover Facility

A map illustrates land cover worldwide, categorized by various types such as forests, water, shrublands, savannas, grasslands, wetlands, urban areas, croplands, snow and ice, and barren lands.

Areas shaded in dark green represent evergreen forests, predominantly found in parts of Canada, Russia, Scandinavia, and the western United States. Evergreen forests are also found in the northern region of South America and parts of Africa. Regions with deciduous forests, shown in light green, are primarily located in the eastern United States, central Europe, and parts of Russia and South America. Water bodies are marked in blue, visible in lakes and large rivers such as the Great Lakes and Amazon River. Mixed forests, shaded in green, appear in the northeastern United States, central Europe, and parts of Asia. Shrublands, shown in pink, are found in parts of Australia, the western United States, Northern Canada, Argentina, South Africa, Northern regions of Russia, and central Asia. Savannas, depicted in yellow, are located in regions such as northern Australia, parts of Brazil, Mexico, and central Africa. Grasslands, shaded in orange, cover areas in the central United States, Argentina, Uruguay, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China. Permanent wetlands, marked in dark blue, appear in parts of north-eastern Canada and central Russia. Urban and built-up areas, shown in gray, are concentrated in major cities worldwide. Cropland and natural vegetation, indicated by red, are found in the Mideastern United States, most of India, and parts of Europe, west Africa, Brazil, and Australia. Snow and ice regions, depicted in gray-white, cover Greenland, Antarctica, and the Himalayas. Barren or sparsely vegetated areas, shown in light yellow, are found in deserts like the Sahara in Africa and the Arabian Desert.
