The map shows three examples of lake desiccation: Lake Chad, near Chad’s border with Niger; Lake Urmia, in northwestern Iran; and the Aral Sea, on the border of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. In all three, the lake’s current extent is dramatically smaller than its historic extent.. The historic extent is shown in orange, while the current extent is depicted in blue.
