Areas of the world experiencing tree cover loss

GK Planet

A map highlights the global deforestation and net forest loss from 2000 to 2015, with areas of significant deforestation highlighted in orange and smaller patches marked in yellow.

North America: In Canada, deforestation is visible in the taiga and boreal forests near Alaska, north-central regions, western and southern Ontario, and eastern Quebec. In the United States, deforestation affects central Alaska, parts of California, the Rocky Mountains, Minnesota, a broad area from east Texas northeastward to the western Appalachians, much of the Northeast, and southern Florida. Mexico experiences deforestation along the Pacific and Gulf coasts and in southern regions. Central America shows extensive deforestation from southern Guatemala through Panama.

South America: Deforestation is extensive from Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to Peru east of the Andes. In Brazil, significant tree cover loss occurs along the Amazon and its tributaries, and is widespread throughout central Brazil, northern Argentina, and Paraguay.

Africa: Net forest loss is observed south of the Sahel from West Africa to southern Sudan, in western Ethiopia, and across Central Africa to the southern borders of Angola and Zambia. East Africa, including Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, and western Madagascar, also experiences deforestation.

Europe: Extensive deforestation is seen in Western Europe and the Balkans, with smaller patches in Scotland, northern Sweden, and western Spain. Eastern Europe and eastern Russia face sporadic deforestation.

Large areas of deforestation spread across Russia's taiga and boreal forests from Kazakhstan eastward through Siberia to the Far East.

Southwest Asia: Minimal deforestation, primarily along Turkey's seacoasts.

South Asia: Deforestation affects Nepal south of the Himalayas, northeast, east-central, and southwest India, parts of Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Southeast Asia: Severe deforestation is noted in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, and New Guinea, with additional patches across the mainland and the Indonesian islands.

East Asia: Central China, North and South Korea, and Japan experience extensive deforestation.

Oceania: In Australia, deforestation impacts areas along the eastern coast and in the southwest.
